I'm not going to say that hte targeting rule itself is a stupid rule; I think the safety aspect does have some merit, not just for the kid getting hit but as well as the kid lowering his head. But the fact that they are ejecting kids from games IS stupid, especially when the vast majority of the "targeting" events are non-intentional.
I can agree with a stiff penalty. Spot foul, 15 yeards and even repeat of the down is fine with me. In fact, if you want to make the player sit for an arbitrary number of plays that's fine too. But ejecting kids from the game for non-intentional hits is ridiculous.
The below play from the Sugar Bowl where Clemson Linebacker James Skalski was ejected for "targeting" Jason Fields shows why the ejection part of the rule is stupid. There are no courts of law during a game but if you watch this video, Skalski is guilty of only being stupid by putting his head down and chancing it ending up looking like an acordian. If you want to argue that, watch Fields actually SPIN INTO the tackle. If you see that he did, in fact, spin into it, how in the hell could Skalski have "targeted" him? He couldn't even see him with his head down and had no way of knowing that Fields would spin into the line of his helmet.
Make the rule stiff if you must, but take out the ejection part. Just my opinion.
